Fall 2016 at New York Fashion Week was about designers flaunting texture and technique. Designers are mixing materials and getting more comfortable with digital prints. Some love to blend old-school artisan skills with the most modern of technology. Below are highlights from four collections.
The designer duo behind The Blonds created a hot pink fantasy for the runway. Phillipe and David Blond evoked the spirit of Marilyn Monroe, Quentin Tarantino and an haute burlesque vision of Alice in Wonderland. Click the photo below for more.
Known for her aesthetic of updated Chinese motifs, Vivienne Tam crossed over to the other side of Asia for her muse. Fall 2016 for Tam was inspired by the upcycled fashion looks of Turkish street style. As a complement to that, she also referenced mosaic tiles found in ancient architecture. Fashion designers often take their inspiration from exotic locations or romantic time periods. Rubin Singer, on the other hand, was inspired by mathematics. He took his design muse from constant formulas and the abstract algebraic concept of homomorphism. All concepts you can picture on the runway, right? Click the photo below for more.
The iconic fashion designer Reem Acra debuted her sexiest collection at New York Fashion Week. Her inspiration for fall was the femme fatale. There were 1930s silhouettes with a lot of sheer panels and peeks of skin. Acra took the fringe trend that was popular in streetwear and gave it a luxury upgrade. The exaggerated long silky fringe found on her gowns moved like a draped fabric, but gave a dramatic effect when the model walked.
